Welcome to day 1 of the 31 Day Courier MBA Course. 31 Days to a more profitable delivery business.
Now if you want to cheat a little and jump ahead, you can go through episodes 1 through 31 in the Deliver on Your Business Podcast. We're talking about a lot of the same things here. It might not follow exactly the order of topics, but it's pretty much the same idea:
Master Your Business Attitude.
Why do we need to master our business attitude?
It all has to do with when they signed you up.
You may have signed up with the intent to be a business owner. You totally understood what it meant to be an independent contractor.
Or maybe you are an accidental business owner. It just seemed like another form of employment.
But Grubhub, Doordash, Uber Eats, all these gig companies knew exactly what they were doing. They chose the independent contractor model because it's cheaper. They don't have to pay you or protect you like they do with an employee.
And a lot of people think we're being victimized by that.
I think a lot of people ARE victimized by it.
But we can take control of the situation. We can choose to take advantage of the independent contractor designation.
You signed up for a B2B relationship. That's a business to business. Gig companies aren't working with you as an employee but they are contracting with you like you are a business. You pay taxes like a business.
So let's take advantage of that.
This is all about embracing our role as a business owner.
I think there's a lot of things that make us feel so out of control right now.
This pandemic is the big one. We don't know what's going to happen on a lot of fronts. We see these gig companies doe weird and wonky things.
The best way, the absolute best way, to take control in a situation like this is, control the things we can control and let go of what we can't.
Your attitude and your mindset are some of the biggest things you can control.
What this course is NOT
This course is not about me telling you how to do delivery.
I think you already have what you need there.
I don't know it all. Not even close. I do know a lot of things that work for me. And I do know enough to know that what works for me isn't always a guarantee it will work for you.
I'm glad to share things that can and might work. But the thing is, I believe you already have what it takes here. This is about you doing what you can do to grow your business.
I'm just here to provide some tools. I'm here to share some experiences, ideas, insights around what it is to be a business owner. To encourage you to embrace that role, use those ideas, and apply them to your delivery business.
Here's what you can expect:
Each day I'll send an email like the one you got today, which led you to this page.
Each day at the bottom of the page, you'll have a series of questions. They are absolutely and completely optional. That said, I'm sending a independent delivery pro polo shirt as a thank you to everyone who participates in all the questions.
That's because I want to see where this course can go for future people. Your feedback helps me a ton. This is truly my way of thanking you for helping me with whatever this may or may not be in the future.
Tomorrow, we're going to start working on a business plan for you.
Okay, I know if someone told me I was going to work on a business plan, I'd be freaking out. Don't worry, it's not that bad. Each day for the next few days we'll take some of the questions asked at the end of the page and they will become your business plan.
It's not a plan you can take to investors and get a ton of money with. At least I don't think so. But it's a plan you can apply to yourself and maybe that helps you get more money or more of what you want to get out of this whole delivery gig thing.
So what next?
I'm going to have some questions below. It's a google forms thing – nothing complex.
For today, I'm simply going to ask about where you are right now. I'm also going to list some times to ask which if any might work for getting together once a week as a group. We probably can't get everyone on all at once, schedules for people with really flexible work schedules are the hardest to line up. But I want to see what times work best for everyone and then we'll line up what we can.
And if you can't make it, I'll see if we can record it for you.
Oh yeah: One more thing. If you haven't signed up on the Facebook group and you'd like to just discuss stuff as we go along, come on over! https://www.facebook.com/groups/couriermba/
Here's what it boils down to, really. Today, other than just a bit of a motivational talk (I hope) about taking control – today's more about me learning from you.
Let me know your thoughts in response to the questions below.
